Il Quartetto d’archi Doric porta un’eleganza e un’intimità sia nel canone classico che nella nuova musica, e la profondità e l’integrità delle sue interpretazioni gli hanno fatto guadagnare fan in tutto il mondo. Dopo aver eseguito cicli di Haydn, Mendelssohn, Britten e Bartók in famose sedi internazionali, tra cui il Concertgebouw di Amsterdam, la Konzerthaus di Vienna e la Elbphilharmonie di Amburgo, ora rivolgono la loro attenzione a Beethoven, continuando il loro progetto discografico per Chandos, con la prima puntata pubblicata nel 2023 e lodata dal Times come “una gioia”. La serie culminerà nel
2026-27, in occasione del 200° anniversario della morte del compositore.
Il loro rigore intellettuale li ha portati a utilizzare archi in stile originale appositamente realizzati per l’esecuzione del repertorio classico, da Haydn a Mendelssohn, e se da un lato sono noti per le loro raffinate esecuzioni di questo repertorio, dall’altro si impegnano anche nella nuova musica, eseguendo opere di compositori come Thomas Adès, Andrea Tarrodi, Peter Maxwell Davies e Donnacha Dennehy. Nel 2019 hanno eseguito la prima mondiale del Quartetto per archi n. 3 di Brett Dean, commissionato loro da Musica Viva Australia, Carnegie Hall, Festival di Edimburgo, Konzerthaus di Berlino, Biennale del Quartetto per archi di Amsterdam e West Cork Chamber Music Festival.
La curiosità e la flessibilità del Doric String Quartet sono rappresentate da una discografia di oltre 20 registrazioni per Chandos, con cui hanno registrato in esclusiva dal 2010, che spaziano da Purcell a John Adams. Sono ospiti abituali di Snape Maltings e della Wigmore Hall di Londra, dove sono stati i primi ad esibirsi con una platea di musicisti.
sono stati il primo gruppo a esibirsi davanti a un pubblico dal vivo dopo il blocco. Ogni anno effettuano una tournée negli Stati Uniti e ogni due anni visitano il Giappone, dove si esibiscono anche alla Suntory Hall. Eseguono spesso repertorio per quartetto d’archi e orchestra, tra cui l’Introduzione e l’Allegro di Elgar, e sono stati invitati a eseguire la prima austriaca di Absolute Jest per quartetto d’archi e orchestra di John Adams alla Konzerthaus di Vienna, con Adams alla direzione. Hanno anche eseguito la prima olandese con la Netherlands Radio Philharmonic al Concertgebouw sotto la direzione di Markus Stenz, e hanno eseguito il pezzo con la BBC Scottish Symphony e la BBC Symphony Orchestras. La loro registrazione con la Royal Scottish National Orchestra e Peter Oundjian, pubblicata da Chandos nel 2018, è stata nominata registrazione del mese dalla rivista BBC Music Magazine e lodata per la sua “sontuosa dolcezza e chiarezza da laser”.

Avendo essi stessi beneficiato di coaching da parte di gruppi come i quartetti Hagen, Alban Berg, Artemis e LaSalle, il gruppo è desideroso di sostenere i giovani musicisti ed è stato Insegnante di Quartetto in Associazione presso la Royal Academy of Music dal 2015 e Direttore Artistico del Mendelssohn on Mull Festival dal 2018.

The Doric String Quartet brings an elegance and intimacy both to the Classical canon and new music, with the depth and integrity of their interpretations winning them fans across the world. Having performed cycles of Haydn, Mendelssohn, Britten and Bartók at famous international venues, including Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Vienna Konzerthaus and Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, they now turn their attention to Beethoven, continuing their recording project for Chandos, with the first instalment released in 2023 and being praised by The Times as ‘a joy’. The series will culminate in
2026–27 with the 200th anniversary of the composer’s death.
Their intellectual rigour has led them to use specially made original-style bows for performing Classical repertoire from Haydn to Mendelssohn, and while they are known for their refined performances of this repertoire, they are also committed to new music, performing works by composers such as Thomas Adès, Andrea Tarrodi, Peter Maxwell Davies and Donnacha Dennehy. In 2019 they gave the world premiere of Brett Dean’s String Quartet no.3, commissioned for them by Musica Viva Australia, Carnegie Hall, Edinburgh Festival, Berlin Konzerthaus, Amsterdam String Quartet Biennale and West Cork Chamber Music Festival.
The Doric String Quartet’s curiosity and flexibility are represented by a discography of more than 20 recordings for Chandos, with whom they have recorded exclusively since 2010, ranging from Purcell to John Adams. They are regular visitors at Snape Maltings and London’s Wigmore Hall, where they
were the first group to perform to a live audience after lockdown. They make an annual tour of the US and visit Japan every other year, with venues including Suntory Hall. They often perform repertoire for string quartet and orchestra, including Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro, and were invited to give the Austrian premiere of John Adams’ Absolute Jest for String Quartet and Orchestra at the Vienna Konzerthaus, with Adams conducting. They also gave the Dutch premiere with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic at the Concertgebouw under Markus Stenz, and have performed the piece with the BBC Scottish Symphony and BBC Symphony Orchestras. Their recording with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Peter Oundjian, released on Chandos in 2018, was named Recording of the Month in BBC Music Magazine and praised for its ‘sumptuous sweetness and laser-like clarity’.
As a group, they enjoy working with other musicians, such as Elisabeth Leonskaja, Alina Ibragimova, Liza Ferschtman and Alexander Melnikov. They recently toured the US alongside Benjamin Grosvenor, worked with Tabea Zimmerman and recorded Mendelssohn String Quintets with Timothy
Ridout. This season they tour projects with Jonathan Biss and Cuarteto Quiroga.
Having themselves benefitted from coaching by groups such as the Hagen, Alban Berg, Artemis and LaSalle quartets, the group is keen to support young musicians and has been Teaching Quartet in Association at the Royal Academy of Music since 2015 and Artistic Directors of the Mendelssohn on Mull Festival since 2018.
