🇮🇹 Il Quartetto Diotima, attualmente uno dei quartetti più richiesti al mondo, è stato fondato nel 1996 dai laureati del Conservatorio Nazionale Superiore di Musica e Danza di Parigi. Il suo nome illustra una duplice identità musicale: Diotima è sia un’allegoria del Romanticismo tedesco – Friedrich Hölderlin chiamò così l’amore della sua vita nel suo romanzo Hyperion – sia un vessillo per la musica del nostro tempo, issato da Luigi Nono in Fragmente-Stille, an Diotima.
Il Quartetto collabora con alcuni dei più grandi compositori della seconda metà del XX secolo, come Pierre Boulez e Helmut Lachenmann. Ha commissionato e ispirato le creazioni di alcuni dei più brillanti compositori del nostro tempo: Toshio Hosokawa, Miroslav Srnka, Alberto Posadas, Mauro Lanza, Gérard Pesson, Rebecca Saunders, Misato Mochizuki e Tristan Murail. Per contaminazione con la musica contemporanea, il Quartetto Diotima getta una nuova luce sulle grandi opere romantiche e moderne, in particolare Beethoven, Schubert, la triade viennese con Schönberg, Berg e Webern, nonché Janáček, Debussy, Ravel e Bartók.
La ricca discografia, comprende le interpretazioni della Scuola di Vienna e l’integrale dei Quartetti di Bartok ed è riconosciuta puntualmente con premi dalla critica internazionale.
Nel 2021 il Quartetto Diotima pubblica tre ritratti musicali di Enno Poppe, Stefano Gervasoni e Gérard Pesson e una di Mauricio Stoleto. Nel 2023, il Quartetto Diotima debutta con l’etichetta Pentatone con una monografia dedicata a György Ligeti, che ha ricevuto recensioni entusiastiche. Secondo Gramophone Magazine “questo nuovo disco del Quartetto dovrebbe diventare il disco di riferimento dei quartetti d’archi di Ligeti per il prossimo futuro”. L’album “Bruckner Album” con brani di Anton Bruckner e Friedrich Klose esce nel settembre 2024. Nella primavera del 2025, Pentatone pubblica il “Livre pour quatuor” di Pierre Boulez nella sua prima registrazione completa, che riceve (tra gli altri premi), il “Diapason d’or”. Per festeggiare il 90° compleanno di Helmut Lachenmann, il Quartetto Diotima ha pubblicato i tre quartetti per archi del compositore nell’autunno del 2025. In omaggio del loro trentesimo anniversario del Quartetto, nella primavera del 2026, inciderà gli ultimi cinque quartetti per archi di Ludwig van Beethoven. Il Diotima è stato il primo quartetto “in residence” a Radio France dal 2019 al 2021
Il Quartetto Diotima è molto attivo nella formazione di giovani artisti ed è stato recentemente artista associato all’Accademia del Festival di Aix-en-Provence, artista residente all’Università di Chicago ed invitato a tenere masterclass all’Università della California a Los Angeles, al Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, alla Casa del Quartetto di Reggio Emilia e alla York University.
Il quartetto si esibisce regolarmente nelle sale da concerto e nelle rassegne musicali più prestigiose del mondo.
Nel 2018 il Quartetto Diotima ha ricevuto dal Ministero della Cultura francese il European Cultural Heritage Award.
🇬🇧 QUATUOR DIOTIMA String Quartet
The Quatuor Diotima is one of the most in-demand chamber ensembles in the world today; it was formed in 1996 by graduates of the Paris national conservatory(Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris). The quartet’s name evokes a double musical significance: Diotima is at once an allegory of German romanticism – Friederich Hölderlin gives the name to the love of his life in his novel Hyperion- and a rallying cry for the music of our time, brandished by Luigi Nono in his composition Fragmente-Stille, an Diotima.
The Quatuor Diotima has worked in close collaboration with several of the greatest composers of the late twentieth century, notably Pierre Boulez and Helmut Lachenmann. The quartet regularly commissions new works from the most brilliant composers of our time, including Toshio Hosokawa, Miroslav Srnka, Alberto Posadas, Mauro Lanza, Gérard Pesson, Rebecca Saunders and Tristan Murail.
Reflected in the mirror of today’s music, the quartet projects a new light onto the masterpieces of the 19th and 20th centuries, especially Beethoven, Schubert, the Second Viennese School (Schoenberg, Berg and Webern), as well as Janáček, Debussy, Ravel and Bartók.
In the quartet’s rich discography one finds amongst others, notably, the recording of all six string quartets by Béla Bartók (Naïve, 2019) and their interpretations of the Second Viennese School (Naïve, 2016). In 2021, the quartet released three musical portraits of Gérard Pesson, Enno Poppe and Stefano Gervasoni and one of Mauricio Sotelo.
On the occasion of György Ligeti’s 100th birthday in 2023, the quartet is releasing an album dedicated to the composer. This album marks the new collaboration between Quatuor Diotima and the label “Pentatone” and is receiving an incredible positive response. Gramophone Magazine writes, among other things: “this new Quatuor Diotima disc should become the go-to Ligeti string quartets disc for the foreseeable future.
« The ‘Bruckner Album’ with works by Anton Bruckner and Friedrich Klose was released in September 2024. In spring 2025, Pentatone releases Pierre Boulez’s ‘Livre pour quatuor’ in its first complete recording, which has been awarded a ‘Diapason d’or’, among other prizes. In celebration of Helmut Lachenmann´s 90th birthday Quatuor Diotima will bring out his three string quartets in autumn 2025. To mark the 30th anniversary of the Quatuor Diotima, a recording of Ludwig van Beethoven’s last five string quartets will be released in spring 2026. The Diotima Quartet was the first quartet in residence at Radio France from 2019 to 2021. The Diotima Quartet has found a new home in the Grand Est region, sharing strong cultural links with Germany and Switzerland, which resonate with the quartet’s repertoire and partners in Europe. This residency allows the quartet to develop its Academy in partnership with the Cité Musicale-Metz inviting young composers and string quartets from all over the world, a chamber music series in Strasbourg as well as an educational residency at the Ecole Nationale de Lutherie in Mirecourt.
Very active in teaching and training young artists, the Diotima Quartet has recently been an Associate Artist at the Aix-en-Provence Festival Academy, an Artist in Residence at the University of Chicago and has been invited to give masterclasses at the University of California in Los Angeles, the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, the Casa del Quartetto in Reggio Emilia and York University.
Quatuor Diotima regularly performs in the world’s most prestigious concert halls and concert series. The Quatuor Diotima is subsidized by the French ministry of Culture and the Région Grand Est and receives support from Centre National de la Musique, Maison de la Musique Contemporaine, Institut Français, SACEM, SPEDIDAM, ADAMI, as well as private donors. The Quatuor Diotima is a member of the PROFEDIM, Futurs Composés and FEVIS professional organizations.
